What's the difference between hemp and cannabis?Updated 2 months ago
It’s a common misconception that hemp and cannabis are two different species of plant. They’re just two different names for cannabis, a flowering plant in the Cannabaceae family.
Hemp was bred to be low in THC (less than 0.3%) and is federally regulated. Hemp products can be manufactured and shipped within the entire United States, although some states have created their own legislation to block it. For example, our 3:1 Releaf Balm cannot be shipped to CO, ID, ND or VA because of individual state legislation.
Cannabis was bred to be high in THC and is federally illegal. States have enacted their own legislation to create a legal cannabis market. The entire supply chain for a cannabis product (sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, sales) must take place within a single state, as states want to maximize taxable business activity. Cannabis products can only be purchased through licensed retailers.
